West - Day Twenty-Nine - July 21, 2005

After stopping at an Italian pottery shop in Santa Barbara, I started up Highway 1 towards Monterey. I discovered upon leaving Las Vegas that my windshield wipers had basically melted to the windshield and came apart when I went to clean it. My first attempt at getting replacements in Santa Barbara failed (it wasn't the rainy season so they didn't have any in stock at the local Saab dealership). Luckily, in Lompoc, I found a Saab dealer with them in stock.

Sure enough, with all the freaky weather going on, I came across rain and lightning along the central coast - and they said it wasn't the rainy season! I was very glad to have gotten the new wipers. It was a long drive up the coast as I seemed to constantly get stuck behind slow cars with trailers in tow that didn't have the courtesy to pull aside. I stopped at Hearst Castle but all of the tours were sold out (fortunately, I had previously been there and gone on a tour). I arrived in Monterey by 6:30 pm so was glad that I didn't try to drive all the way to San Francisco.
